Google Pay Flex Credit Card: Rewards and Usage

Google Pay Flex Credit Card: Rewards and Usage

So today, Google India announced that it has launched Flex, a RuPay credit card in partnership with NPCI and Axis Bank. The Flex card is being launched on the RuPay network and, for now, is issued in partnership with Axis Bank. Google Pay has also mentioned that more banking partners may be added later. There is no joining or application fee. Google Pay has started rolling this out gradually, and users can join the waitlist from within the app.

Since it is a RuPay credit card, it can be used:

  • At offline shops by scanning UPI QR codes

  • On apps and websites that support RuPay cards

Now let’s take a look at what benefits this card offers. Also, is there any benefit compared to other credit cards like Kiwi and Jupiter? And how does it compete against other UPI-based RuPay credit cards? We will briefly look at all this information.

Rewards on UPI Payments

You can join the waitlist on Google Pay app. The Flex banner will appear on the homepage of the Google Pay app.  The card rewards you with Stars. One star is equal to ₹1 as of now.

Can you directly redeem these stars?

  • For every ₹500 spent, you earn 1 star.
  • If you spend more than ₹10,000 in a reward cycle, you get 2X benefits, which means you earn 2 stars for every ₹500 spent.
  • If you spend more than ₹15,000 in the same reward cycle, you get 4X benefits, which means 4 stars for every ₹500 spent.
  • If you spend more than ₹30,000, you get 8X benefits, which means 8 stars for every ₹500 spent.

There are:

  • No strong welcome benefits

  • No category-based rewards

  • No exclusive merchant offers

  • No reason to switch if you already use cards like Kiwi, Jupiter, or similar RuPay options

Flex does not improve rewards, does not reduce costs meaningfully, and does not introduce any feature that users were actually asking for.

Who is this card even for?

Realistically, this card only makes sense for:

  • Users who don’t have any credit card approved

  • Users who use only Google Pay and don’t care about rewards

  • First-time credit users who just want a basic option

For anyone else, Flex adds no value.

Rewards (cashback) aren’t very exciting. For every ₹500 spent, you earn only 1 star (or INR1), which is very, very low compared to other UPI-based credit cards.

Unless this is the only option available to you and you don’t have any other approved credit card, there is no strong reason to apply for this card.

The welcome benefits and rewards are not good. There are no exclusive or special benefits offered with this card. Overall, this is a very simple and common card without any special value.

In short, this card does not offer much value. The rewards are very low, especially when other existing UPI-based credit cards already offer better benefits. Because of this, there is no strong reason to apply for this card. Flex by Google Pay is less like a serious credit card in a market where UPI credit cards are already competitive; launching a card with average rewards and no clear advantage makes little sense.
